Earlier in 7th and 8th centuries Japanese art was affected by Buddhism and that impact was clearly visible in their art. As Buddhism religion started spreading around the world it impacted a lot of cultures. Japanese was one of them. In that era their art was mainly religious. Buddhist impact was on their art. Paintings were seen as they provided aid in meditation. Art was greatly impacted by religious views. Later in 9th century when Japanese turned away from Chinese invasion they were mainly attracted by secular arts. Later in 15th centuries both religious and secular arts were flourished. In context of understanding modern Japanese art we can classify Japan as Pre-war period and post-war period. Pre-war with invasion of western thoughts Japanese saw a mix of arts. There were lots of artists who were deeply influenced with western thoughts and that was clearly visible in that era’s Japanese art.
