The fragmentation of land may occur because of a number of water divisions in the land. As a result of different kinds of water divisions and creation of different structures such as canals, ditches and leeves both in the wetlands and the agricultural lands, there is a fragmentation in the land. This often leads to land loss. Allison et al states that as a result of these diversions a change is observed in the overall hydrology of these lands. Also because of the high speed flow of water, there is fragmentation of land into small patches leading to land loss. Because of the same, there may be an impact on the smoother vegetation of the aquatic regions and the tidal flows. It also leads to the spoiling of the river and sea banks and the increase in the overall stagnation of water. Penland has observed that as a result of a constant fragmentation, there is a loss of land and the disturbance in the landscape patterns. The process of fragmentation and land loss is being observed from the past 100 years. At present there are a number of control structures which have been created over different structures of land.
These structures may include the creation of dams and the leeves in the rivers, the degradation of canals and the drainage systems (Dingler et al, 1993). As a result of land fragmentation in coastal areas, there has been a huge decrease in sedimentary load which can even reach the mouth of the river and can lead to the formation of a new and a different basis for the land along the coast. Also because of the gathering of water in excess amount on the land, there may be an observation of reduction in the amount of marshes in the land (Houck, Oliver, 1983). In the recent times, the increase in the fragmentation of land is a major threat in the efficiency in production. As a result of more and more fragmentation, more and more amount of land is getting submerged into water. This is also having an impact on the quality of water. Also, there may be a decrease in the overall quality of water (Ingebritsen et al, 2014). Further, land loss is harmful as it can have an impact on the biodiversity, impact on the hastening of specifies around the coastal areas, the cut off from one region to another and the loss of wetlands.
