Google has been critiqued in many research works and articles on innovation management as being successful. Google is a large organization that managed to successfully innovate. The innovation challenges that organizations like Google face generally are as follows.
Firstly, large companies that are focusing on innovation will face problems with respect to keeping their current income and at the same time continually expand as well. Here innovation management becomes challenging for the company. However, not all companies are in this critical position. Where innovation is properly planned for and when implemented in a holistic sense, then it is possible for there to be success for the companies. There will still be a degree of uncertainty that organizations must take advantage of. Companies might end up losing steam for improvement and innovation if they are not able to keep pace with the changes that they need to implement. Now consider how Google manages this.
Firstly, Google got out of its conventional management thinking. Conventional management thinking has been followed by organizations for many years. Management innovation made in the 1980s with respect to the automobile industry was followed for a long time, but big organizations learned to think outside the conventional techniques. In 2012, after around a decade of its establishment, Google could successfully break into a new set of management thinking that many companies tend to follow now. According to the Brand Finance Global statistics, it is presented that Google is one of the most upcoming brands that reported around 50 billion volume in a year and yet follows a more customized radical technique that most other organizations had not risked to follow. In innovation management, Google hence was seen to set a pioneering path (Barry and Cesare, 2011). This is one of the first ways to improve innovation capability. When organizations wan to improve their innovation capability, the first thing they must do is think outside the box. Conventional management and improvement techniques would work in theory but in practices are seen to suffer. Google by ensuring that it made use of a pioneering techniques customized for its business capabilities could escape this trap.
The unconventional innovation model that Google had built was a combination of engineering competencies and human resource capabilities. Firstly, the company was using its engineering skills in computer science as a core capability. However, relying on just an engineering or scientific capability without really considering the resources that would be needed for helping would result in concerns and Google has realized this (Barry and Cesare, 2011). Google arranges for people management in such a way that human capital is ready for the task at hand. There are some key management principles identified based on which Google works and these are presented below.
