Aesthetics and design concepts
Steam bent lighting
Tom Raffield is a product designer based out of England and has created a mark in the furniture industry with his blend of wood and other natural materials. He applies the technique of steam bending. Hardwoods like ash, walnut and oak are used in his designs. He began to discover the aesthetics involved in the usage of sustainable materials when the new steaming method transformed the designs into reality and helped him to create a range of products. According to Tom Raffield, the designs are (Waterlow, 2016):
1. Forward thinking
2. Natural and innovative
3. Value addition to the planet
He creates wonderful designs with all the natural resources. Every product develops after a meticulous study on the timer piece being harvested. As the timber gets transformed into a specific form of art, he finds the product meaningful and poetic. Be it the wooden lighting or naturally made furniture, he cherishes the antiques as he also captures a lot of commercial contracts due to the attractiveness in the design.
