Usage of crops in producing biofuel also raises one more ethical issue. Since the crops are being used to produce fuel, this has led to increased demand of such crops. Hence the prices of those crops have risen across the world due to the shortage of the crops. This again has a negative effect on the world population. The aim of using biofuel as an alternative source of energy was to make lives of the people easier. Usage of alternative source like solar power does not affect the general population. Solar power is in abundance and hence using solar power does not raise any ethical issue which arises due to the usage of biofuel. Similarly other alternative sources of energy like wind energy is also available in plenty and usage of that renewable source does not affect the people.
In the case of the Biofuel as an alternative fuel it should be noted that it uses crops that are consumed by human beings as source to generate the fuel. Globally across the world food is not available to everyone. There is still a large section of global population mostly from poor nations where they do not receive enough food to sustain themselves. Many people die of hunger every year. Hence food which is being used in large quantities as an alternative source of fuel should be used to feed the people who are dying of hunger. Crops are grown to consume as a food and not used as an alternative source of fuel. If there had been abundance of the food globally and nobody would have been dying of hunger then it would have made sense for the people to use the crops as an alternative source of the fuel and thus produce biofuel. However since this is not the case it is not ethical on part of the people to use crops as an alternative source of fuel.
