As all the memory traces are distributed over the cortex, it gets difficult for the single lesion to break or destroy all the memory traces. On the other hand, the medial temporal lobe will store the location of the most cortical memory which will have the traces spread over the small regions, and it will have a block to the vast cortical traces of memory. The loss due to medial temporal lobe is generally global and vast in nature.
