As per the ongoing research, it has been found that El Nino fluctuations had direct effect on the crop plantation and production in the Southeast Asian countries like Indonesia and Philippines. However, Zhou, Chen & Wang (2012) pointed that in the years when El Nino leads to lower than average rainfall, the rice production in China is positively affected and the production increases. However, the effect of El Nino on the rice economy of China has been variable and the results produced from different research show that the production of rice and the variability in the prices differ with the different fluctuating positions of El Nino. According to Abdolrahimi (2016), the highest effect of ENSO has been noticed in the economic changes and the production changes of Jiangxi which are the largest rice producing province of China (Cashin, Mohaddes & Raissi, 2015).

According to Meng et al. (2013), after the El Nino fluctuations within a gap of 2 years in different parts of Northern China, locust outbreak is observed which feeds on the rice leaves and reduces the production and quality of the rice. On the contrary, the rice production in the northeastern region of China increases after the El Nino fluctuations since the El Nino fluctuations in that region produce high temperature. According to Perkins (2013), all types of weather anomalies directly affect the agricultural production leading to excess or shortage in the supply of the agricultural commodities. As a consequence, the world prices of the commodities are highly affected due to such changes.
