Mo Zi and Universal Love –
The section on Universal Love by master Mo Zi or Mo Tzu is one of the seventy one chapters of the text known as Mozi. However there is some debate regarding the authorship of these texts as Mo Zi is not considered the sole author of the texts. The texts are most likely to be reinterpretations of the epistemological premises of Mohism as propounded by Mo Zi, by the disciples and followers of Mo Zi (Eno, 2010).

‘Universal Love’ as understood by Mo Zi was a culmination of the warring periods in the Chinese history into a sense of ‘filial piety’ that would ensure peace and humanity in the world. The text impresses upon a ‘sage’ or a virtuous individual or a rule/ emporer the need to maintain the ‘order’ of the world and remain aware of the ‘disorders’ as and when they plague the world. The philosophy motivates individuals to remain conscious of the calamities that plague the world. Mo Zi claimed that most of these disorders were a result of lack of ‘mutual love’. The text also refers to a certain historical context where sons did not love their fathers, brothers did not love their elder brothers, subjects did not love their lords, and vice versa. The lack of ‘mutual love’ or the love for ‘self’ more than the love for others, were responsible for the disorders. This sense of preferential love for the ‘self’ and disregard for others and their property conveys the core concept of disorder. The text reflects of a time when familial love has dwindled, faith among people had declined, war was a reality, and so was crime and feudalism. It is only love that would restrain an individual from causing pain and loss to the other. In order to bring peace and humanity back, one had to indulge in filial piety and transcend one’s self and respect and love the other in order to make sense of their loss and a general disorder in the world.
