According to Stockholm International Peace Research Institute Data Set of 2012, Canada scored the number 12thwith spending $22.6 billion in military which is 1.3 of the GDP. Doing 2013 and 2014, the Canadian military spending decreased to such an extent that it was vanished from the fifteen most spending on military countries. Therefore, it can be concluded that Canadian military spending decreased or was reduced over the years. What happens when a country cuts its military spending? A downfall and dysfunctional military.[Para 1] A report by Conference of Defence Associations Institute and MacDonald-Laurier Institute called ‘Putting the Armed Back to Action’ found out that there were approximately 9,000 staff allotted to buy military equipment in 1990s, but was reduced to more than half of 4, 200 by the year 2004. This report was based on approximately more than fifty confidential interviews as well as workshops conducted on currently employed and retired political staff, officials, and consultants. This report emphasized on the fact that decreased military spending had a devastating effect on the function of military under the Harper Government which took sharp cuts on the budget (Brewster). There are drastic efforts to heal the Canadian military by increasing the amount Government spends on equipment but it is unworthy without any proper planning and has no benefits.

There have been massive increases in Government expenditure on military but to no avail. Over the last few years, number of projects has increased and also the requirements of reporting for capital projects by fifty percent according to the report, ‘Putting the Armed Back to Action’. However, it has reaped no fruits. When controversies surrounded the F-35 project and government increased its efforts to purchase fixed-wing search and the rescue planes, more and more requirements for reporting were used, comprising of a novel Public Works secretariat to look over the buying and selling. The system remained unbroken. In the last year, defence procurement was greeted by Government as a big step to heal this destroyed system, but it only led to more delays. Now these delays led to projects losing their purchasing power parity because of inflation reason, which meant that military was only left with some equipment pieces such as capable gear according to the report (Brewster). Therefore, the massive increases in Government spending led to more and more spending by the Government without any proper results or benefits.
