Another major clash between the cultures was their religions. There is a deep and explicit connection between culture and religion of Greece. Their characters, customs, values and practices are based upon their religion of Christianity (Koutsantoni, 2005). While on the other hand, WASP guy was not so much into his religion. Probably that was the reason that he easily agreed to be baptized by Toula’s family else he could never ever marry Toula as Greek people are so firm about their religion (Perren, 2004).The third factor which is so much focused in the film is the eating habits of Greek. Greek consider their traditional diet to be the most balanced, perfect and healthy one. It is strange for them to hear that one is vegetarian, as they eat too much meat themselves. Contrary to their habit, Ian was a mere vegetarian. At this point, Ian had difficulty in managing with this family. Toula labeled her family as: ‘Loud, breeding, Greek eaters’. There are certain other factors which are very much highlighted by Joel Zwick that is their hairstyle and dressing. Their dressing code and outlook is depicted in a funny and ridiculous way, which is a biased factor.
Women of the family carry old fashioned, large hairstyles, while men wear gold chains around their neck. Contrarily, Ian’s family is depicted as very modern and sophisticated Americans. Greek nationalism and their proud towards their nationalism, tradition, history and literature are also highlighted in the film. Toula’s father, Gus, has shown to be connecting the root of every word to some Greek root. Toula’s grandmother showed an expression of hatred towards Turkish throughout the film which shows Greek people’s connection with their history. The movie clearly identifies the distinct features of two cultures though Greek culture remained more focus in the film. There are certain exaggerations related to Greek culture (Hassapopoulou, 2007), and sarcasm which makes this film very interactive and entertaining. There is no doubt that Joel Zwick successfully shows a clash between two cultures, their meet-up, challenges in cross-cultural communication and merger of the two people belonging to contrasting cultures (Perren, 2004). This film is very helpful in understanding the way of handling situations in cross-cultural matters and bridging the communication gap between cultures.
