Transactional theory is basically an exchange procedure between the subordinates and leader. The leader follows the policy of reward and punishment. There is a connection between the behaviours of the leader and this exchange process but the theory has been unsuccessful so far to establish a strong connection. A leader has to provide rewards to its followers in order to increase their efficiency. It should be known that reward has many forms. It doesn’t only mean incentives and compensations but also it means recognition by the sub ordinates.

But here the concept of rewards and motivation is mixed with each other. Rewards are also considered as a source of motivation and thus what becomes the point of pondering is that in transformational theory leader motivates his followers and in transactional theory he motivates them by giving rewards. Here then it is questioned that if the employees are being praised and motivated in both theories, then what would be the difference in transactional and transformational leadership. The literal meaning of passive management by exception is that leader waits for the problem to rise. But this behaviour is not been shown in transactional leadership. Also, it is not explained that how the leader deals with the problems of performance. Active management by exception refers to the situation where leader looks for mistakes. But here also it is not explained that how he rectifies those mistakes. It is also not clarified whether this type of management is included in transformational leadership or not.
