NATO-The North Atlantic Treaty Organization was established in the context of the increasing political friction and tensions between USA led western countries and erstwhile communist countries which were in close alliance with each other. With such threat looming around, The NATO was forged in year 1949 as an alliance of military defense between the USA and its allies from European countries .Its main objective is to safeguard their interest both politically and financially from any assumed military invasion from The USSR and its Eastern Bloc allies. With passage of time and changing global landscape, there have been consistent questions being raised related to relevance of NATO in present world. This report’s objective is to analyze the relevance of NATO.
However in present circumstances, world leaders and various countries have started raising questions on the relevance of NATO in current world. There has been a significant debate over the relevance of NATO over past few years. If NATO’s recent missions like in Libya and Afghanistan are analyzed or its role in war against terrorism, it can be easily pointed out that somewhere NATO is going beyond its role as a defense agency which was established with a different purpose. With existence of United Nations Security Council (Duke, 2008), it becomes even more ambiguous to explain the relevance of NATO.
