On August 28, 2013, Bill Clinton made a statement that ignited a burning question on priorities. “A great democracy does not make it harder to vote than to buy an assault weapon” (Clinton, 2013). Buying an assault rifle in the United States does not require any identification proof in more than 40 states whereas for voting one requires id proof everywhere. Such is the irony of the laws in the United States.

The United States Constitution under its Second Amendment allows its citizens the right to bear arms. Gun politics has always been a controversial issue in American politics. In America, it is easier to get a gun than some of the common amenities (Kessler, 1983).

Thinking of an abortion? In Missouri, it is easier to get a gun than an abortion. In Iowa, guns sell faster than lemonade. In Texas, getting a driver’s license requires more training than getting a gun. Such is the paradox of the laws prevailing here. These liberal laws have led to increased number of gun related violence across the United States. This clearly explains incidents like Binghamton shootings, Fort Hood shooting, the Virginia Tech massacre, Oikos University shooting, and 2011 Tucson shooting.
