Ho Chi Minh was born in 19 May 1890 in Kim Liên, which was part of the NghệAn Province in the then colony of French Indochina. Minh was born as NguyễnSinhCung (original name), to Nguyen SinhHuy. His father was employed as a teacher by the then French government in Vietnam (Indochina). Although he was very respectful person and intelligent teacher, he didn’t choose to learn French which was mandatory for the French government employees. His refusal led him to lose his job and later to flee from his hometown. He travelled throughout the country in order to help peasants, and hence gained grass root level knowledge about the people’s feelings and situation. Minh’s father was a born nationalist and he made sure that the infusion of nationalism is there within his children. Being influenced by his father’s teachings about nationalism, Minh developed the mind-set of a nationalist and believed that Vietnam must be governed by its own people. Minh’s sister joined the French Army, and she used to steal fire arms and weapons from the armoury of French government. She was caught and later imprisoned for life for her acts (Lacouture 1968).
Unlike his father’s detestation towards French language, Minh opted to study French in the town of Hue. He later led demonstration against the taxation system imposed on the poor peasants of Vietnam. The anti-government stand and demonstration led his dismissal from the CollègeQuốchọc, where he was still pursuing education. He left the country in order to get a chance to continue his education abroad, and unsuccessfully applied for French Colonial Administrative School. After his failure to get into the school for higher education, he started travelling the world in order to get knowledge. In the pursuit of his world travel, Minh worked in ships and travelled various placed until 1917. He arguably worked for a wealthy American family in Brooklyn and also for the General motors in the United States of America. While he was in the United States, he came in contact with various Korean citizens who had the nationalist frame of mind towards their own country. The contact was said to have influenced Minh’s political outlook and hence boost his desire to think about Vietnam (Quinn-Judge 2002).
