Let me share a real life example to demonstrate the stages in a better way. As a child, I experienced an incident of drowning at the age of five which induced the fear of water in me. Being a kid in my early preoperational stage, which learnt only via physical experiences and symbolism, my developing schema adapted to the fact that going near water could be dangerous. However, as I grew slowly and entered my concrete operational phase, I saw others swimming in water without drowning. Then I came to realize that my concepts and schema regarding water was not reasonable and logical enough but could not overcome my fear of water, as I could not understand how the mere movement of hands and legs could stop one from drowning. Hence, I could not get myself to learn swimming as it seemed impossible to me. Slowly as I entered my formal operational stage, I learned about the concepts of pushing the water behind in order to be pushed forward, and also the techniques of exhaling and inhaling.
I learned the logical and real life use of the abstract concepts through this experience. I later used these experiences in order to overcome my fear of water by repetitively telling myself that it was basic physics being applied when I swim. In this way via various stages of Cognitive development, I learnt to fear water as a kid and later used my logical reasoning and concepts to learn swimming.Besides this, another experience which helped me enhance my emotional development was demise of my grandmother. I was immensely attached to my grandmother but she use to stay ill most of the times. Although I didn’t have any idea about the meaning of death so I could usually hear my family members talk about it. They were concerned about my grandmother and expected that she would not live longer. This shattered me and I kept weeping most of the times. Then one day when she actually died, I was unable to control my emotions. My mother managed me and helped me understand that death has to come. After death, a person is safe in the hands of the god. These teachings help me get emotionally strong.
